Wings In The Night

.
I have seen them quite often.

Wings In The Night     -    22 Jan 20

Slow pulsing beat
Sculling through
The chill of Autumn air
Almost silent
Wings in the night
Owl hunts

Beautiful, silent, deadly.

Pale Wings

A short poem based on observations from many years ago.

Pale Wings  -  08 Jan 16

Glisten in the light
Of a solitary street lamp
Silent flight
Through the night
Hunting
Owl watching

The memory triggers images whenever I hear owls calling.

Night Hunters [Haikū]

Another little Haikū to keep things flowing.

Night Hunters [Haikū]  -  22 Nov 13

Whispers in the night
Mice plot the quest for their food
Owls wait patiently

This might have been partially inspired by the fact that I had watched the third part of the "Blade" trilogy last night, not that there were owls and mice in the movie but the idea of night hunters rather stuck in my mind,.

Haikū 69

More from the hand-written Haikū archives.

Life  -  12 Jul 10

Feeling my old life
slipping away ... crumbling
Waiting for new birth

Connection  -  12 Jul 10

I touched your hand ... once ...
the connection ~ permanent ~
always connected

Smile  -  13 Jul 10

Your smile wickedly
dances through my mind ~ showing
glimpses of a dream

Message  -  3 Jul 10

She left a secret
message ~ wrapped it in petals
and sealed with a kiss

Darkness  -  13 Jul 10

Darkness wrapped round me
Owls call ... speak my thoughts tonight
Mice hide in long grass

More to come before long...

Owl Evening

This poem was triggered by my stepping outside for a few moments and hearing an Owl calling then being aware of what was happening in the western sky.  Without further comment I present it now.

Owl Evening  -  17 Nov 12

Darkling sky
Holds a memory of the day
That has been

Thin silver crescent
In the west
Foretelling the month to come

Owl serenading
Farewell to the Sun
Greeting Lady Moon

I really Love the way Muse shakes my mind and offers suggestions.

Night Storm Spills

I lay awake in the night listening to the rain beating down and Muse suggested, rather strongly, that I wrote down what I was thinking.  When I woke, more words started flowing and the whole thing came together.

Night Storm Spills  -  27 Aug 12

Gathering wind
Rustles leaves
Shaking branches
Owls are silent ~ expectant
Waiting for the storm

Rain on an already
Saturated
Ground
Flows
To an already full stream

Night ~ silent but for wind
Storm ~ lashes the land
Spills ~ its rain

I feel that this poem works even though it didn't grow in the way I expected ~ thank you Muse for the prompts.

Night Flight

The opening line of this poem had been drifting in and out of my consciousness for the whole afternoon till, in the late evening, it emerged with more than I had expected in the way of content.

Night Flight - 03 Oct 11

On tattered wings she flew
Through night’s
Spangled dome
Onward
Toward a fleeting dawn

Her lover
…Waited
In a distant land
On a distant shore
…Listened
To the wind soughing
Through the grass
Rattling the stems
…Watched
As the waves danced
To the rhythm of the breeze
…Called
With his mind
Come to me

Owls circled him
Whispered
She is on the way
She will be here
Soon

She saw his spark
On the beach
And knew
They would be
Together forever

There are several small inspiration points in this poem all coming together in these stanzas.

Night To Night

The first stanza was born in the early hours of 24 Apr 11 when I noticed a last-quarter Moon hanging over the eastern skyline, it fell neatly in Haikū format. Another day passed before the second and third stanzas asked to be birthed, the second in Tanka and the third back in Haikū form.

Night To Night - 24/25 Apr 11

Half Moon ~ Eastern sky
Wind rattling willow leaves
Owls serenading

Dawn ~ Sun rushing on
Racing wind ~ chasing a cloud
Shadows hide the dark
Night waits in caves, crevices
Waiting for time to emerge

Sunset, sets night free
To roam the land ~ sing with owls
Nightingales surprised

I find it fascinating the way poems are birthed and...sometimes, insist on being birthed.

Sailing Dark Seas

This was born in the early hours and is more a collection of images rather than a 'proper' poem, whatever one of those is.

Sailing Dark Seas - 24 Jan 10

First quarter moon
Sailing over a midnight sea
Toward the west

Stars scintillate, flashing,
Signalling safe passage
Through reefs of cloud

Owls call through the dark
Secret messages for those
Who wake in the midnight hour

Calling on my Muse to show me something new.

July Senryū

I was asked recently, how is it that I went to bed so late - and why? I think that the answer to both parts of the question is that I am encouraged to do this by one of my spirit guides. Owl assists access to wisdom and vision and, rather surprisingly - play. I do a lot of my most productive things in the very early hours of the day and this is often when I am shown the little things that grow into poems, stories and whatever else.

This is just one example of this assistance...

Tasting the night air
Watching clouds skip across stars,
Jewels in the sky

Look eastward, sun rising - he
Tints clouds, magenta

I realise that talk of spirit guides and spirit animals and the like may well alienate some of my readers but I just have to 'say it as I feel it' and if this offends your sensibilities, I am sorry.

To those of you still with me...be with you again next time and in the meantime, watch the sunrise and smile.
